Exams
OHIP will allow any patient under the age of 19, or over the age of 65 to see an Optometrist once a year without charge to them. Patients between the ages of 20–64 are no longer covered under OHIP and these patients are responsible for the cost of their eye exam, unless a
special medical condition exists.
- For an annual ocular assessment
$78
- For a partial
ocular assessment $37
- Digital
Retinal Imaging-Optomap $45.
Many 3rd party insurance companies are including the cost of eye exams in their benefits packages.
In House lab-in our fully equipped lab our technician surfaces lenses to the correct prescription and curvature using surfacing, finishing, edging equipment. The lab technician helps with frame assembly and frame repairs. We provide quality work using hi tech equipment like Briot Accura Pro.
Optomap-takes a digital image of the back of the eye and retina to
check the health of the eye. It allows the doctor to look for any signs of diseases or damage such as ARMD(age related macular degeneration), retinal tears, detachments and diabetic retinopathy, which for some patients may show no symptoms. Taking only minutes to perform, the results are immediate for the doctor to review with the patient. The optomap provides a permanent record of the condition of the retina and if performed at each visit allows the doctor to monitor any changes.
Autorefractor-produces a reading based on the curvature of the eye, which helps the doctor, determine the refractive error.
Tonometer-measures the intra ocular pressures within the eye to determine whether they are within normal range. Elevated pressures may suggest possible signs of glaucoma and require further testing by the visual fields machine.
Visual fields machines-performed to determine whether peripheral vision has been affected or is affective over time. The results provide the doctor with information to help diagnose, evaluate and monitor ocular diseases including glaucoma and neurological diseases.
Contacts
There is a wide range of contact lenses available, many of which are kept in stock. The current technologies and designs the office carries are Acuvue Oasys, Advance and Advance for Astigmatism with Hydroclear, Acuvue Bifocals, Focus Night and Day, Focus Dailies, 02 Optix and Softlens Multifocal.
Contacts can be worn for near or far sightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia (bifocals) and coloured ones to change eye colour.
There is a great variety of lenses available prices ranging from $35 to $350.
A full eye exam is recommended yearly for contact lens wearers, not only to check visual acuity, but also the health of the cornea as well as the rest of the eye. Anyone that would like to wear contact lenses should initially have a comprehensive or full eye examination by an Optometrist where visual acuity, health, current prescription and corneal measurements are determined. Options of what type of lens is best for the patient are discussed as well. Once candidacy is established and information gathered, the patient is fitted with contact lenses and shown how to insert, remove and care for the contact lenses.
The patient is monitored for adaptability to ensure their ocular health is
not compromised and visual functioning is at the highest level.

Lenses
Our in house lab generates and edges all our lenses. The lab uses Essilor, Nikon, Hoya, Rodenstock and Sola products.
Single vision Lenses-lenses that have one viewing area throughout the lens. The correction can be for far distance or near reading.
Bifocal Lenses-lenses that have two distinct viewing areas within the same lens, a distance and near portion. The distance portion is the top of the lens and the reading or add portion is located below the lower lid. Bifocal lenses usually have a visual half moon shaped segment in the bottom portion of the lens. There are different size segments, st 28, st 35 or executive. The bifocals without the line are called progressive lenses (see below for description).
Trifocal Lenses-is an extension of the bifocal, which provides an additional intermediate vision correction. This segment sits directly on top of the reading segment and just below the patient’s pupil. There are different size segments, st 28, st 35 or executive.
Progressive Lenses-lenses that correct vision for 2 or 3 different distances without the visible segment line. Instead they have a graduated section in which the power progresses smoothly from the distance prescription to the near prescription.
The majority of our lenses are made of a CR39 plastic with a front surface scratch coat but the lenses can be made in glass if requested.
The lenses can have an antireflection coating applied which helps reduce the glare. A transition lens is a lens that changes from clear to a dark sunglass with the sunlight and is available in all prescriptions. The patients with high prescriptions can have their lenses done in a hi index material which reduces the weight and thickness of the lens. |
